Discharge Area

Top Previous Next

That portion of catchment in which the net flow of subsurface water is directed toward the water table.

An area in which subsurface water, including water in the unsaturated and saturated zones, is discharged at the land surface.

Why is a discharge area important?

A discharge area is where groundwater can be abstracted.  It is also an area where groundwater can interact with surface water.
