Flow Regime

Top Previous Next

A hydrological profile of a water resource.

A river has a flow regime determined by geology, topography, climate and vegetation.

The 5 components of a flow regime are:

1. Magnitude of discharge

2. Frequency of discharge

3. Duration of discharge

4. Timing or predictability of flows

5. Rate of change of flow: how quickly flow changes

Why is a flow regime important?

The flow regime determines the ecological integrity of a water resource.
