Nitrate is chemical compound containing the nitrate (NO3) radical.
Nitrate is a salt found in groundwater and can be a good indicator of contamination resulting from sewage disposal and fertiliser application. Nitrate also occurs naturally in high concentrations in some environments.
Why is nitrate important?
Nitrate is an important part of the nitrogen cycle and when present in high concentrations renders groundwater unfit for use.
