Attribute Data

Attribute Data is presently managed by using the following systems:

NGA

The National Groundwater Archive (NGA) is a centralised web enabled database and accessible 24 hours a day. All clients with a direct interest in groundwater can register to search, capture and store data. Registered users can also extract data directly via the Internet.

To register go to: http://www3.dwa.gov.za/nganet

Enquiries: ngaur@dwa.gov.za

The NGA is populated with in excess of 254 200 Geosites across the country, only point data.

The spatial distribution of borehole records is also available.

WMS

The Water Management System (WMS) contains over 31 000 groundwater macro element samples, containing over 389 000 individual laboratory parameter analysis, including data from the National Groundwater Quality Monitoring Programme (NGwQMP).

Data request can be sent to Georequest Service at georequests@dwa.gov.za.

HYDSTRA

This application contains surface, groundwater and rainfall data.  Data from the National Groundwater Level Monitoring Network is included.

Data request can be sent to Georequest Service at georequests@dwa.gov.za.

GEOSITE NUMBERING

The need to collect and capture as much groundwater-related data as possible is indisputable. The most important mechanism in controlling this development and management of groundwater is deemed the numbering of all geosites. Each Region was allowed to choose a unique numbering system. To obtain numbers contact the relevant Geosite Number Allocator.

Spatial Data

Spatial Data is generally available in GIS format – coverages or shape files. The geodatabase is an ARCGIS GEODATABASE storing all cleaned and verified spatial hydrogeological data. Groundwater related spatial data that are available are for example.

  • Hydrogeological mapping series 1:500 000 data – groundwater occurrence, groundwater quality, borehole density distribution, elevation and rainfall
  • Hydrogeological regions
  • Harvest potential
  • DWA Datasets.
  • Groundwater Metadata.

Queries can be sent to Georequest Service at georequests@dwa.gov.za.
