A gauging Station is a site on a river which has been selected, equipped and operated to provide the basic data from which systematic records of water level and discharge may be derived. Essentially it consists of natural or artificial river cross section where a continuous record of stage can be obtained and where  a relationship between stage and discharge can be determined.
The Department uses various methods to convert stage versus time records into flow versus time records. One of these methods include the use of flow gauging structures.
