The X2 region is the second largest sub-drainage region of the X region. This area is drained by the Crocodile River and its tributaries. The Crocodile River originates North of  Dullstroom in the western parts of the catchment area. The Crocodile River flows through mountainous terrain and into the grasslands of the Lowveld.. It flows eastwards past Nelspruit and into the Komati River at Komatipoort, situated upstream of the Mozambique border. Mountain ranges in the north and the south are separating this sub region from the upper Komati River catchment (X1) and the Sabie River catchment. (X3)

This region is the most developed of the four X sub regions. Large residential areas,  agricultural development and forestry are the main features of this sub region. The greater part of the Lowveld is undeveloped as it is situated in the Kruger National Park.
