This sub drainage region is the third largest sub region of the X - region. This sub region is drained by the Sabie River and its tributaries of which the Sand River is the largest. The Sabie River originates west of the town of Sabie and the other main tributaries have their origin in the Drakensberg to the west. 

Features of this area are the large scale forestry development in the western parts, and the large residential areas  in the northern parts. The greatest part of of the Eastern lowlands is undeveloped as it is situated in the Kruger National Park.
