Welcome to the Mooi-Mgeni Transfer Scheme – Phase 2 (MMTS 2) web page. The web page is based on the findings of the Feasibility Study.
Water is a scarce resource in most countries, South Africa included. It is incumbent on the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (Water & Forestry) to manage our water nationally to ensure its equitable distribution to all user groups and users, including the natural environment as a legitimate user of water, to ensure the longer-term sustainability of our rivers and associated ecological systems.
Water management can take on many forms, but for sustained economic growth and social well-being, it remains necessary to continually investigate and plan for medium- to long-term water requirements. This is the responsibility of the Directorates: National Water Resources Planning and Options Analysis under whose direct guidance and control the MMTS 2 Feasibility Study is being conducted.
The scheme needs to be implemented if the current economic growth in KwaZulu-Natal is to be maintained, which will also contributes to sustaining the current economic growth of South Africa. Water & Forestry will motivate to the South African Parliament to proceed with implementation and current indications are that a final decision to implement the scheme will be taken in 2007.
