Large Bulk Water Supply Reconciliation Strategy, First Stage, December 2006

Strategy Steering Committee

The Strategy Steering Committee (SSC) was established to take the Reconciliation Strategy forward as the next step in the management of the Vaal River System.

Membership of the SSC is similar to that of the Project Steering Committees during the previous phase of the Vaal River System and consists of representatives of agriculture, local authority, water service providers, mines, energy and industry sectors, national departments, provincial government and civil society representing a wide variety of stakeholder groups in the Vaal River System.

The objectives of the SSC are to:

  • Ensure the implementation of the recommendations of the Vaal River System Reconciliation Strategy;
  • Ensure the implementation and recommendations of the Vaal River System Integrated Water Quality Management Strategy
  • Update both Strategies to ensure that both remain relevant; and
  • Ensure that the Strategies and their recommendations are appropriately communicated.

The core functions of the SSC include, among other things, the following:

  • Be the first line of defence against any crisis;
  • Implement the recommendations of the Strategy and see that these are strictly adhered to;
  • Be able to adjust the strategy if required;
  • Report back to the DWA, Provinces and Local Authorities; and
  • Provide feedback to stakeholders and the public.
