LAUNCH OF THE FOREST SECTOR TRANSFORMATION CHARTER, 25 JUNE 2007

The Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry, Mrs Lindiwe Hendricks, has launched the Draft Forest Sector Transformation Charter [PDF - 1.3MB] as well as a Users Guide [PDF - 450KB] and a Companion Booklet [PDF - 686KB] at the Forest Sector BBBEE Indaba on 25 June 2007.

The Charter aims to ensure an inclusive and equitable forest sector:

  • in which black women and men fully participate;
  • that is characterized by the use of resources, sustainable growth, international competitiveness and profitability for all its participants;
  • that contributes meaningfully to poverty alleviation, job, creation, rural development and economic value adding activities in the country.

The Charter has now been completed and agreed upon with the sector. This signals the most significant achievement in forestry, since the Charter encapsulates all the national key priorities for the forestry sector, as identified in Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (AsgiSA), Joint Initiative on priority Skills Acquisition (JIPSA).

Delegates from a broad base of stakeholders will attend the Forest Sector Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) Indaba which include labour sector, civil society, forest sector, non-governmental organisations as well as the National Forests Advisory Council and the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee and Select Committee.

Stakeholder consultations will commence immediately after the Indaba and will be in the following Provinces:
