BASWA LE MEETSE HOME PAGE

    Background

    The Baswa le Meetse (Youth in Water) Award aims to recognise the achievements of our youth in their efforts of educating our society about integrated water resource management, promoting water use efficiency as well as health and hygiene. The award precedes with competitions from district, province and national levels. The Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry presents the award annually to learners who developed outstanding projects.

    Aims and Objectives

    • To increase awareness of the general public through learners about integrated water resource management and impart knowledge, water management skills to enable the communities to protect natural resources, manage water resources efficiently, to address issues related to water and sanitation;

    • To stimulate the interest of the youth in water and sanitation and encourage them to pursue careers in water resource management and sanitation;

    • To promote health and hygiene and

    • To increase awareness about invasive alien species and the general promotion of the protection of natural resources.

    Who can participate?

    Grade 6 learners only

    The Educators, learning area co-ordinators, facilitators of Arts & Culture are requested to encourage the learners to participate in this competition. 

    NB. Provincial winners are selected during the same school year. These provincial winners are however adjudicated at national level during the new school year. (For example, if you are selected as a provincial winner during 2004, you will only be adjudicated at national level during 2005).

    "Washing of Hands, Use and Care of Sanitation facilities for Health life"

    Support for interested Schools/Learners

    Upon confirmation of participation through receipt of registration forms, the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry ensures that support, guidance and assistance is provided to interested learners. Guidelines are circulated to the educators from the participating schools.

    Judging criteria

    Applications are judged according to the following criteria

    • Subject knowledge

    • Relevance

    • Originality

    • Creativity

    • Presentation

    Selection of process

    An adjudication panel, composed of representatives from various institutions, judges the project based on the above criteria. A selection process takes place at district, provincial and national level.
