SANITATION INTRODUCTION

Lack of access to basic services such as clean water and decent sanitation remains a global concern and the provision of these services as an important part of reducing poverty. South Africa is amongst many countries faced with the global challenges affecting the eradication of sanitation backlog and has committed itself to join the globe towards enhancing and fast-tracking programmes and developments towards fulfilling the international commitment to eradicate sanitation backlogs by 2015. The South African government in response to the global sanitation related challenges has however set out higher targets and committed itself in ensuring that all buckets in formal established settlements will be eradicated and all households have access to basic sanitation by 2010.

The focus of 2009 Sanitation and Hygiene Week will be to highlight the need for accelerated sanitation services delivery and to encourage proper maintenance of sanitation facilities by those who already have access to facilities. The core message is intended for encouraging everybody to be involved and contribute to better and acceptable sanitation facilities. This will further highlight that the government is committed to meeting the set sanitation MDG target but the government can’t do it alone, the society must be sensitized to contribute to the proper use and care of these facilities.
