The aim of the national WeedBuster Week campaign is to consolidate awareness, support and ownership of the ongoing effort in order to ensure that Invasive Alien Plant (IAP) control initiatives in South Africa are effective and sustainable.

The principal objectives of the national WeedBuster Week are:

  • To raise public awareness and understanding about the negative impacts of invasive plant species;
  • To promote voluntary proactive responses and nurture an appreciation for indigenous/ non-invasive plants;
  • To foster community ownership of the challenge of the management and containment of invasive alien plants (IAPs);
  • To provide the public with the information and skills required to play a responsible role in safeguarding water resources in particular and our natural heritage in general;
  • To highlight the ongoing concerted effort by WfW and various partners and stakeholders towards addressing the challenge of invasive alien plants.
During WeedBuster Week events will be organised countrywide in South Africa targeting schools, community groups and the general public. And this year for the first time, gardeners

can visit certified Invasive Alien-Free nurseries to get advice on combating IAPs, and buy environmentally-friendly alternatives to aliens. Customs officials will be educated through a tourism campaign to prevent aliens being imported. WeedBuster teams are being organised at a local level to give alien clearing demonstrations to interested members of the public.

The theme for 2007 is: Protect Our Natural Resources.
