FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS IN THE ORANGE RIVER BASIN

Untitled Page

Announcements

There is currently a surplus of water in the Orange River basin even after the influences of Phase 1 of the LHWP have been taken into account.  It is therefore likely that some further developments will take place to enable the surplus to be utilised, either inside the Orange River basin or through additional transfers to the Vaal River basin.  Transfers to the Vaal River basin can take place either through the second phase of the LHWP or via a transfer situated wholely in South Africa - (ie. the Bosberg Dam which is located upstream of Gariep Dam).

Numerous possible future developments along the Orange River have been considered as part of the Orange River Replanning Study (ORRS).  To date, no firm decision has been taken regarding which developments, if any, will proceed.  Of the 30 or more possible dams considered along the Orange River, most have been eliminated from further consideration due to either cost or environmental/social implications.  Of the remaining developments under consideration the following are the most promising (in no particular order) :
