DIRECTORATE: RESERVE REQUIREMENTS

AIM: To develop procedures, strategies and methodologies to determine and implement the groundwater Reserves.

This Directorate performs various Surface Water and Ground Water Reserve Determinations, i.e. ad hoc, desktop, rapid, intermediate and comprehensive. This involves the following focus areas:

 

Policies, Strategies and Methodologies

AIM: To develop policies, strategies and methodologies to determine and implement the Reserve (surface water and ground water, wetlands and estuaries).

This Directorate will develop policies, strategies and methodologies for Reserve determination. This work involves (a) the development of procedures and methods to determine the Ecological Reserve for various aquatic ecosystems components for water quality and quantity, including for surface and ground water, wetlands and estuaries; (b) the development of methods and procedures for the determinations of the basic human need component of the reserve; (c) the development of methods and procedures to support reserve decision-making processes; and (d) the development of a river conservation strategy. Note: This is done in conjunction with Directorate: Resource Directed Measures Compliance

 

Reserve determination and implementation

AIM: To prioritise Reserve determination studies, undertake and initiate implementation of the results (for surface water and ground water, wetlands and estuaries).

The Directorate is responsible for developing a strategy (with priorities) for Reserve determination, through consultation with Regional Offices and other sections in the Department to meet Reserve requirements at different levels of the determination process. In addition the Directorate is determining (and updating) ad hoc requests and comprehensive determination for the Reserve in significant water resources in partnership with Regional Clusters. This work involves (a) the compilation of strategy (with priorities) for Reserve determinations, (b) the scheduling, management and coordination of Reserve determination studies, and (c) the development of Reserve implementation policies and strategies.
