Announcements

AIM: To develop a National Water Resource Classification System (NWRCS), through public gazetting, as required by Section 12 [PDF - 35KB] of the National Water Act - 1998 (No. 36 of 1998) [PDF - 774KB].

The NWRCS will consist of procedures to be followed for recommending a class when classifying Water Resources. The system will also provide a definition of these classes.

  • Procedures, Strategies and Methodologies

Procedures, strategies and methodologies for the NWRCS (including specification of Resource Quality Objectives) will be developed. This work involve (a) the development of a framework and policies for the classification of water resources, (b) the development of a strategy for implementation of the classification systems, and (c) the development of a strategy to create the capacity to implement the classification system

  • Implementation co-ordination

This focus area involves prioritising, piloting and coordinating the implementation of the classification system, which will be transferred to Regional Operations Branch once the system is established. This work involves (a) the pilot testing of the classification framework and systems, and (b) the determination of implementation priorities.

  • Technical assistance and capacity building

This focus area will involve providing technical assistance and capacity building on water resources classification processes/projects to the Regional Operations Branch responsible for implementing the classification system (probably with compulsory licensing). This work involves (a) the identification and development of training material to assist with the implementation of the classification systems, and (b) the provision of technical assistance to regional implementation of the classification system.

  • Oversight

This focus area involves the auditing the implementation of the classification system, once established and transferred to the Regional Operations Branch.
